Blog

Stay in the know with our waxing blog.

So this is my blog, eh? Last night I was told that maybe my business, urban waxx, would be very blog friendly, and I was a little embarrassed to admit that I really had very little idea as to what an actual blog was. A journal? Who would want to read about the daily goings on in a waxing salon, I asked. I was answered with a resounding…EVERYONE.
Well, I’m not so sure about everyone, but I began remembering all of the times over the years that I have told someone what I do. The conversation usually goes a little something like this: “So, Shannon, what do you do?” “Well, I own a waxing salon.” “A what salon???” “A waxing salon. You know, a place where you can go to pretty much have everything and anything on your body waxed smooth as a baby’s bottom.” “Wow! Do you do Brazilians?” “Sure, that’s about 90% of what we do.” And, then, as if by magic, I am surrounded by a group of eager, curious people with a million questions about what I do and how it is done.
People seem to be endlessly fascinated by waxing, especially Brazilian waxing. The idea that I spend more time in the other women’s nether regions than most ob/gyns is a constant source of conversation. I have found myself discussing vagina at book clubs, weddings, elegant dinner parties. So, maybe a blog would be a more appropriate forum. This way, gals and guys can check out for themselves what goes on here. To me, and the other employees of urban waxx, what we do is as normal as ordering a sandwich. But I guess what’s one woman’s sandwich is another woman’s trip to the moon. I guess compared to working at Starbucks or working in an office, ripping hair from someone’s most intimate of areas might seem a little outrageous. But truly…I love it! I wouldn’t do anything else.
Of course, I haven’t always only done waxing. I graduated from Arizona State with a BA in theater (oh…that can really pay the bills), and after I spent a year or so bartending, I decided to go back to school to become a licensed Esthetician. Basically, with this license I can do facials, body treatments, make-up, and of course waxing. I worked for about 10 years in various day spas, doing everything from slimming body wraps to bridal make up. But boy, oh boy did I fall in love with waxing. I loved everything about it. I loved the fact that I could see my work immediately (I’m a big proponent of instant gratification), I loved that I had a natural gift of making people laugh during otherwise incredibly awkward situations, and I loved that it was quick and fun. Also, an added bonus was that women became very comfortable in front of me, which leads to some very interesting conversation. I love living vicariously through my clients! Especially now, when I am almost 6 months pregnant with my first baby and leading a very boring life, all things considered. Of course…I uphold a strict policy of what goes on in my room stays in my room! I may, in the course of this blog’s ramblings, tell a story about one of my client’s that I find particularly interesting or hilarious, but all names and incriminating details will be changed to protect the innocent!
So, that’s it for today. My first entry! Actually, that was fun. I hope that what ensues will give you a little glimpse into what goes on at my salon, urban waxx, answers questions, and above all, make you laugh!
